Installation using the Installer is the easiest way to get started. It’so easy that I won’t go through the installer.

The only thing to think about is that Because of missing or insufficient write permissions in “C:\Program Files”, we recommend to use alternate folder for XAMPP (“C:\xampp” or “C:\your folder of choice\xampp”)

After the installation is complete, you will find XAMPP under:

Start > All Programs > Apache Friends > XAMPP

You can use the XAMPP Control Panel to start/stop all servers and also install/uninstall services.

Unzip the zip archives into the folder of your choice. XAMPP is extracting to the subdirectory “[target]\xampp” below the selected target directory. Now start the file “setup_xampp.bat”, to adjust the XAMPP configuration to your system.

If you choose a root directory “C:\” as target, you must not start “setup_xampp.bat”.

Like with the installer version, you can now use the “XAMPP Control Panel” for additional tasks.

Back to Index

( For example if you want to have it on a USB drive )

If you extract XAMPP in a top level folder like “C:\” or “D:\”, you can start most servers like Apache or MySQL directly without execution of the file “setup_xampp.bat”.

Not using the setup script, or selecting relative paths in the setup script, is preferred if you are installing XAMPP on a usb drive. Because on each pc a usb drive can have an other drive letter. You can switch from absolute to relative paths at any time with the setup script.

# If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host

XAMPP is only for a development environment. NOT a production environment!

XAMPP is configured is to be open as possible and allowing the developer anything he/she wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.

Here a list of missing security in XAMPP:

The MySQL administrator (root) has no password.

The MySQL daemon is accessible via network.

ProFTPD uses the password “lampp” for user “nobody”.

PhpMyAdmin is accessible via network.

Examples are accessible via network.

MySQL and Apache running under the same user (nobody).

To fix most of the security weaknesses simply call the following command:

/opt/lampp/lampp security

It starts a small security check and makes your XAMPP installation quite secure. For example this protects the XAMPP demo pages by a username (‘lampp’) and password combination.

You do that by clicking on the Admin button on XAMMP Control Panel and then login with the password wampp Then when you are logged in to FileZilla Server you should click on:

Edit->Users

So you want to remove the via @AddThis. I can’t blame you for being irritated that they don’t have that in the settings yet. But as usual we help our readers with an easy solution until they have fixed the plugin. Please keep in mind that if you update the plugin in the future you have to redo this steps.

You can do this in two ways.
Option 1. Download the file from your server.

Download the file addthis_social_widget.php from you server.

Located in the folder wp-content\plugins\addthis
Search for:

You should find it in this two arrays: ‘fb_tw_p1_sc’ => array and ‘fb_tw_sc’ => array in my file they are on row 68 and 70.

add tw:via="yourtwitterusername"

I changed it and added sitedevelopment because it’s our twittername so mine reads:

<a class="addthis_button_tweet" tw:via="sitedevelopment"></a>

Save the file and upload it to your server.
Enjoy!
